PAGASA Bicol River Basin Flood Forecasting and Warning Center (BRBFFWC) inaugurated

Aimed at enhancing the weather-related services in Bicol Region, the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Atmospheric,Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (DOST-PAGASA) inaugurated its newly rehabilitated Bicol River Basin Flood Forecasting and Warning System(BRBFFWS) on 30 April 2019 at CBSUA, San Jose, Camarines Sur.

  Apart from the launching of BRBFFWS, DOST-PAGASA refurbished the almost-dilapidated and outdated devices and monitoring equipment, rainfall and other water level gauges at the old flood forecasting center located inside the CBSUA campus.

  PAGASA Administrator, Dr. Vicente Malano, said that the technical and state-of-the-art rehabilitation of the system, which serves as early warning device and system for the flood will result to a more effective and relevant flood forecasting and warning activities. Malano explained that the Bicol River Basin Rehabilitation Project presents not only the improvement of the existing network of monitoring the hydro logical conditions but also the expansion of real-time data monitoring facilities that will provide a full level of observations throughout the whole basin. He also extended his gratitude to the government of Japan for their unwavering support and commitment in helping Filipinos to prepare for and eventually minimize catastrophes.

     Also present during the ceremony were the Minister for Economic Affairs of Japan Embassy, Makoto Iyori, who unveiled the marker, together with Department of Science and Technology Secretary, Hon. Fortunato T. Dela Peña, Undersecretary for Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change, Dr. Renato U. Solidum Jr., and former Vice Governor of Cam Sur and currently Camarines Sur Provincial Administrator, Hon. Fortunato Peña.

The event speaks of the collaboration and friendship between the Philippine Government and the people of Japan. (DJBarretto)
