CBSUA: GUARDIANS OF THE BICOL COAST

The Environmental Science Society (ESS), together with the Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science students, took part in the International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) on October 2, 2025, in Barangay Sabang, Calabanga, Camarines Sur. The activity, originally postponed due to Tropical Storm “Opong,” pushed through at 6:00 AM as volunteers gathered with a shared purpose to help restore and protect the coastline.

Led by Ma’am Maria Shaula Celaje and supported by the dedicated officers and members of the Environmental Science Society, along with faculty from the College of Arts and Sciences, the cleanup drive mobilized dozens of participants. Filled with a sense of responsibility for the environment, the team worked together to remove plastics, bottles, packaging materials, and other waste scattered along the shoreline.

Each piece of trash collected represented a step toward a cleaner community and a healthier marine ecosystem. The activity not only addressed visible pollution but also strengthened the participants’ understanding of environmental stewardship. Volunteers emphasized that protecting coastal areas is a collective duty, one that spans across ages and communities.

Beyond clearing debris, the ICC fostered deeper environmental awareness among students and residents alike. The initiative encouraged the practice of proper waste management and highlighted that sustainable habits begin at home, in schools, and within local communities.

Through this collective effort, Barangay Sabang became more than just a cleanup site it symbolized resilience, community involvement, and care for nature. The International Coastal Cleanup, recognized globally, continues to spark action by inspiring individuals and organizations to participate in conservation efforts.

This year’s participation proved that when communities unite for a cause, meaningful change is possible. The ESS and BS Environmental Science students demonstrated that small actions, done consistently and together, can create a lasting impact on the environment. They call on everyone to continue advocating for cleaner coastlines and a more sustainable future.
