EMBEDDING SUSTAINABILITY: CBSUA MAKES SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE CORE TO ALL PROGRAMS

CBSUA ensures all students gain meaningful SDG education through curriculum, extension, and research. The Central Bicol State University of Agriculture (CBSUA) has implemented a landmark educational policy mandating two core courses in Sustainable Agriculture (Sus Ag 1 and Sus Ag 2) for all students enrolled across every program and system campus. This institutionalized approach is a strategic effort to embed Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into the foundational university experience.

The system-wide requirement ensures that all graduates, regardless of their specialization—including non-agricultural fields like Engineering, Education, and Veterinary Medicine—achieve universal competency in agroecological principles, food security, and climate resiliency.

Sus Ag 1 deals with the overview of Agriculture which includes history, principles, policies and standards, production of organic soil amendments, crop and farm animals (swine, poultry & small rumenants). It shall include processing and marketing of farm products. Sus Ag 2 Overview of sustainable agriculture, issues and challenges, trends, soil health and its environment. It shall include Site Assessment, Edible Landscaping, as well as Farm/ Garden Design. Sus Ag 2 Overview of sustainable agriculture, issues and challenges, trends, soil health and its environment. This curricular framework directly addresses multiple SDGs, notably SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) by promoting resilient food systems, SDG 4 (Quality Education) by broadening sustainability literacy, and SDG 13 & 15 (Climate Action and Life on Land) by emphasizing methods that enhance soil health and biodiversity. The mandate positions CBSUA at the forefront of institutions actively graduating professionals intrinsically equipped to lead sustainable development in the Bicol region and beyond.
