OVER 100 FAMILIES TAKE REFUGE IN CBSUA CAMPUSES AS STS OPONG HITS

More than 100 families, totaling 343 individuals, sought refuge across the four campuses of the Central Bicol State University of Agriculture (CBSUA) as Severe Tropical Storm (STS) Opong made landfall. The evacuees came from flood-prone areas in the municipalities of Calabanga, Gainza, Pili, Pasacao, and Sipocot. This immediate action was taken in close coordination with the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (PDRRMC) of Camarines Sur to ensure the safety and well-being of community members located in high-risk areas.

The Campus Administrators, together with the CBSUA Resilience Center (CRC),ย  the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) coordinators, and security personnel from each campus, worked to ensure the evacuees’ needs were met, allowing them to rest with peace of mind during the storm’s onslaught. The distribution of families was as follows: Calabanga Campus housed 34 families (117 individuals); Pili Campus provided temporary shelter for 36 families (110 individuals); Pasacao Campus accommodated 37 families (91 individuals); and Sipocot Campus took in 5 families (25 individuals).

In addition to providing shelter, a relief distribution led by the Provincial Government of Camarines Sur was held at the CBSUA Pili Campus. The distribution provided families from Gainza and Pili with food packs from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).

Moving forward, as the community recovers from the impact of STS Opong, the CBSUA and the PDRRMC will ensure that all sheltered families and individuals can safely return to their homes.
