The Philippine One Health University Network (PhilOHUN) organized the “One Health Toward Resilient Communities” activity to address the critical issues of disaster resilience, public health, and environmental sustainability. The two-day event took place on June 28-29, 2024, and was attended by students and facilitators from various partner universities in the Camarines Sur, including Partido State University (PSU) and the newly partnered Central Bicol State University of Agriculture (CBSUA).
The initiative is a response to the Philippines’ susceptibility to natural hazards and the persistent challenges posed by climate change. According to the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) and the Centre for Research on the Epidemiology of Disasters (CRED), the country faced 274 disasters in the past two decades, significantly impacting public health and other sectors.
The first day of the event involved seminars by esteemed experts in the field of One Health. Participants gained valuable insights from discussions on various topics, such as “Region V Geo-Hazard: Facts and Figures,” “Effect of Ecosystem on Human and Animal Health,” and “Infectious Diseases Management.”
On the second day, students and facilitators traveled to Brgy. Paniman, Caramoan, Camarines Sur, for community engagement and a veterinary mission. The community-focused approach of the initiative was highlighted by valuable insights on “Responsible Pet Ownership” and “NutriMeals Preparation in the Aftermath of Disaster.”
Mr. Lorenzo Miguel Marasigan, the PhilOHUN Program Manager, facilitated a fellowship session and guided students in forming their own One Health Student Clubs.
