The Central Bicol State University of Agriculture (CBSUA), through the College of Development Education (CDE) and the Extension Services Division (ESD), conducted the second session of SHOP for Reading (School and Home Partnership for Reading): A Short-term Course for Teaching Beginning Reading in English at the Reading Hub of Barangay Caroyroyan, Pili, Camarines Sur, on July 16, 2026.
The session brought together parents, community volunteers, and local education partners for a series of learning activities on teaching beginning reading. Assoc. Prof. Karen B. Perez, Dean of the College of Development Education, served as the resource speaker and discussed phonemic awareness, sight words, fluency-building activities, and reading strategies for Grade 1 and Grade 2 learners.
Barangay Kagawad Rodel P. Veras, Chairperson of the Committee on Education, welcomed the participants and underscored the importance of community support in helping children develop reading skills.
Participants also took part in demonstrations, guided practice, and group activities, where they applied the reading techniques discussed during the training and exchanged experiences on teaching beginning readers at home and in the community.
The activity is part of the University’s continuing literacy extension program, which equips parents and community volunteers with practical skills to support children’s reading development through school and community partnerships. | 𝘙𝘦𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘱𝘩𝘰𝘵𝘰𝘴 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘡𝘺𝘳𝘢 𝘉. 𝘏𝘪𝘭𝘢
