CBSUA EMPOWERS SAN ISIDRO YOUTH THROUGH URBAN GARDENING, EDIBLE LANDSCAPING SEMINAR

The Central Bicol State University of Agriculture (CBSUA) Pili Campus, through its fourth-year Agricultural Extension students and the Extension Services Division (ESD), successfully conducted a seminar on Urban Gardening and Edible Landscaping on December 14, 2025, at the Multipurpose Hall of Barangay San Isidro, Pili, Camarines Sur.

The seminar aimed to equip local youth with practical knowledge and skills in sustainable gardening and edible landscaping, while also providing hands-on activities and IEC materials from the Department of Agriculture – RFO V to support ongoing community initiatives.

The program featured lectures and demonstrations from key resource speakers, including Ms. Rosita C. De Lumen, Head of the Organic Research & Development Center and Project Leader for Edible Landscaping, who discussed principles, benefits, and practical applications of urban gardening. Ms. Abigail V. Guinoo, ESD Director, also shared insights under CBSUA’s flagship YOUNGSTERS project (Youth Empowerment through Initiatives in Agricultural Practices, Strategies, and Innovations), encouraging participants to adopt modern and sustainable practices for community and household benefit.

The seminar formally began with a welcome message from Brgy. Kagawad Emmanuel S. Bulalacao, head of the Committee on Agriculture, highlighted the importance of agricultural initiatives in local development. Support messages were also delivered by Mr. Geronimo R. Ayo, Acting Municipal Agriculturist of Pili; Mr. Rodel M. Garbeles, Agricultural Technologist/MUPAP & OAC Focal Person; and Mr. Basil Dr. Layosa, Agricultural Technologist/LYDO Designate, emphasizing the role of collaboration in youth empowerment and sustaining agricultural progress.

Participants actively engaged in the seminar through knowledge checks, sharing of insights, and hands-on activities, applying the concepts they learned under the guidance of resource speakers. The program concluded with closing remarks from SK Chairman Ian S. Dela Cruz, with the turnover of IEC materials, ensuring the youth and community have the resources to continue urban gardening and edible landscaping initiatives.
